In what is arguably one of the saddest news to come out in ages, a 7-year-old from Alabama was forced to sell lemonade in order to pay for her brain surger.

According to a report by CBS, Liza Scott set up a lemonade stand inside her mother’s bakery to raise money for her multiple brain surgeries. Scott has three malformations on her brain and in order to pay the exorbitant amount for her operations and expenses related to it, she had to work hard to sell lemonade.

The girl’s mother and Savage Bakery owner Elizabeth Scott explained her malformations.

“She has three cerebral malformations. One is what they call a schizencephaly. So it’s a cleft in the frontal lobe in the right side of her brain, and we think that’s what’s causing the seizures.”

The family will be going to Boston’s Children’s Hospital next week for the girl’s first operation. In spite of health insurance and after purchasing additional insurance, the cost of the medical and travel expenses have already surpassed $10,000 from their own pockets.

Liza Scott also said how she isn’t hopeful about making it out alive.

“I can’t handle it. So, I hope I make it. My mom keeps saying I’m going to, but I feel like I’m not.”

The family also has been seeking donations using a Mightycause page

”As a single mom and the financial supporter of both of my children, this is not something you can budget for.”

The donations of the page far exceeded the page’s $75,000 and reached $206,210 so far. Many people saw the story in a negative light and also criticized the U.S Healthcare system in general.
