UFC 259 saw Bantamweight Champion Petr Yan defend his title against Aljamain Sterling in the third last match of the event at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The ending to the match shocked the MMA world as Yan hit Sterling with an illegal knee during the 4th round. As a result of this, Sterling was awarded the Championship via disqualification – a matter he wasn’t happy with at all.
During the post-fight interview, Sterling vented his frustrations as he said:
“That’s not the way I wanted to win. It’s F****** b*******.””
However, it seems some fighters don’t buy Sterling’s disappointment and think that he’s just acting.
UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera claimed that Sterling should be awarded an “academy award” for the performance.
Former UFC bantamweight champ Demetrius Johnson said knees to a grounded opponent shouldn’t be illegal.
“Here’s the thing you cant stall the fight by sitting on your knees. Knees to a grounded opponent should be allowed!”
Former UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt said,
“He better not take that belt with him.. Why the fuck interview him, if he is so concussed ??”.
UFC lightweight heavyweight contender Dominick Reyes took a shot at Sterling as well.
People recover faster when they actually get KO’d”.
It’s simply unprofessional what Yan did to ruin an otherwise great match.
