The Bantamweight Championship match between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan at UFC 259 ended in controversial fashion after Yan hit Sterling with an illegal knee during the 4th round.
Due to this illegal move, the match was called off and Sterling won the title via DQ. It wasn’t smooth sailing for Sterling either as he was berated and ridiculed for the manner in which he won the title.
Now it seems a rematch will be happening soon. During the post-fight news conference, Dana White commented on the match and stated that a rematch will happen as soon as possible.
“Yeah, as soon as possible. Aljo went to the hospital, he’s cleared. Nothing wrong with him. Tuesday we’ll get together and we’ll figure out where that fight fits because Sterling wants the rematch, too. They both want the rematch, we gotta do the rematch. We’ll figure it out.”
White then noted he was utterly surprised that Yan would even perform the illegal knee during the match.
“I think that there’s a lot of fatigue, frustration. It was a good fight, but the thing is he was turning it on. He was starting to win the fight, he was starting to absolutely, positively take control of that fight. He was winning. You could see Aljamain Sterling breaking. Why you would throw that knee, I couldn’t tell you.”
We will have to see when the rematch will be taking place as it is certain both competitors want it to happen.
