Coming 2 America was the long-awaited and highly-anticipated sequel to the hit 80s film Coming To America that starred Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. The movie hit Amazon Prime recently and it seems it broke a record that the film crew will certainly be proud of.

As revealed in a statement released on Monday, Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke said that Coming 2 America became the most-streamed movie in a single weekend during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salke explained how them acquiring the film from Paramount Pictures paid off over its debut weekend:

“The Zamunda Royal family has arrived and audiences around the globe welcomed them enthusiastically! The premiere of Coming 2 America has far exceeded any of our wildest expectations. It’s clear an entire new generation of fans have joined the enormous loyal fanbase who already adored the magical world created by global phenom Eddie Murphy, the incredibly talented filmmaking team, and the hilarious, all-star cast of existing and newly-cemented legends. Coming 2 America is the perfectly fun, celebratory, escapist, feel-good comedy movie that worldwide audiences needed.”

While accurate viewership data has not been given, news from Screen Engine shows that Coming 2 America performed better than another Amazon original comedy movie Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which made its way onto Amazon Prime in October last year.

Despite critical reception for Coming 2 America being mediocre at best, it seems fans certainly loved watching it regardless. Perhaps we might just see a third movie in the series, as Eddie Murphy previously stated he already has an idea for it.
