Things became heated up on International Women’s Day after Cris Cyborg decided to take on UFC president Dana White. Cris, the former Women’s Featherweight Champion, decided to take to Twitter to take a shot at White.
She based the tweet on Dana’s infamous comment that women MMA athletes will never be allowed to fight on the UFC canvas.
MMA Bellator was actually the first mix martial arts promotion to have hosted the first women’s only MMA fight. They hosted a women’s Strawweight fight (115 lbs) where Zoila Gurgel became the first woman kickboxer in the history to win a Bellator Championship.
UFC then went on to have a change of policy in 2013 and hosted the first ever female only fights. Rhonda Rousey was the first woman MMA athlete in the history of UFC to have won the Bantamweight Championship. She also went on to have a strong enough trajectory as a kickboxer and became inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame as well.
White has had a great change of heart since and in an interview with AXS TV, he referred to himself as “a big idiot” for making those remarks about female fighters way back in 2011.
