Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the longest-running television shows out there, with its 17th season still going strong. The show made its debut in 2005 and was a smash hit with fans and critics alike. It remains ABC’s most popular drama.
Now it seems a long-time star of the show will be making their return in the current season. According to a report by US Weekly, Sarah Drew will be returning to the show as confirmed by ABC.
She played the much-beloved Dr. April Kepner in the show and made her exit at the end of season 14 in 2018 after nine seasons.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2018, Drew had this to say regarding her exit from the show:
“I was told that the show had too many characters and that they needed to downsize because they couldn’t service all of the characters effectively. They didn’t want us to be left in the background and not getting much of a story.”
[Showrunner] Krista Vernoff said that she felt like April had been through so much and had come out the other side and that she didn’t know what she could put her through again. It was really hard to hear that. But Krista had a lot of very complimentary things to say about the work that I had done — especially this past season — and that April was going to have her happy ending.”
The latest episode of the 17th season featured the unexpected death of a long-time character as well. We will have to see how Drew’s character will be making her return this season.
