At UFC Vegas 21 on Saturday, No. 3 ranked Leon Edwards made a return to the Octagon after 20 months. He squared off against No. 13 ranked Belal Muhammad.
Both competitors needed the win badly. Unfortunately, the match ended in an unexpected and tragic way. In the second round, Edwards unintentionally poked Muhammad in the eye, which immediately brought him down as Muhammad crumpled to the ground.
Muhammad was clearly in severe pain and told the referee Herb Dean that he was not able to see out of the eye. The match was called off and the main event was ruled a no-decision.
Edwards would also apologize to Muhammad for the accident.
Accidents can happen at anytime during an MMA match and this was no different. Still, it was certainly an unfortunate end to a highly anticipated match.
