Swizz Beats and Timbaland talked about many things on The Breakfast Club, such as whether Usher has what it takes to defeat Chris Brown in a Verzuz battle. Beats ended up spilling the secrets of a Verzuz rap battle that almost happened, but never saw the light of day.
Beats revealed that Dr. Dre, the legend himself, was about to go up on the stage to have a Verzuz battle, only to step away from it at the last minute after a terrible technical inconsistency happened.
When Dr. Dre wasn’t feeling the sound from Teddy Riley and Babyface, that hurt our heart. If you go back, Dre was at the Teddy Riley one, he came at the end. He was supposed to announce that he was going to do Verzuz that night! I don’t think he was going to announce who he was battling. He was going to announce ‘I’m ready, I’m coming.’ Then he got on the phone like ‘man, I can’t be a part of nothing that sound like that. My legacy is quality.’ I was like ‘we just lost Dre over the sound? That one felt pretty crazy. But since then, the energy has been pretty good.
While it must have been great to see Dr. Dre take on the rap’s finest in a Verzuz battle, nobody can be really surprised after knowing that he decline to participate over some music.
Dr. Dre is known to be an indomitable perfectionist, as well as one of the best audio engineers in the entire rap game. With his proclivity towards quality rather than quantity, he felt it was justified to walk away rather than compromise the quality of his performance.
