The main villain from the classic Disney film 101 Dalmatians Cruella de Vil intrigued several generations of fans, but no one truly expected an origin story for her. That all will change as Cruella is set to release this year and it will focus entirely on the origin of her character and stars Emma Stone.
While taking inspiration from other villains from various mediums, it is certain Stone is creating her own brand of villain in Cruella. The film takes place in the punk-rock revolution of 1970s London and centres around Cruella’s relationship with Emma Thompson’s Baroness von Hellman.
There is also no doubt that Cruella will be wearing a variety of different costumes throughout the movie and Disney has just released photos of a few of them for fans to see.
As revealed by EW, a few photos of Emma Stone wearing all sorts of costumes as Cruella have certainly gotten fans excited. Original designs for the costumes in question were also shown. Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan was hired to make the costumes for Cruella and it is safe to say she did an excellent job.
According to production designer Fiona Crombie, the aesthetic of 1970s London truly helped set the tone for the film in general.
“This story has heightened elements to it, but it needed a real sense of location.”
The designer added that as Cruella develops in the film, so will her costumes.
It’s quite clear in the story how [Cruella] develops, so you’ve got a good arc to her life in clothes.
Cruella is set to stream on Disney+ (via Premier Access) on May 28 and will also release on theatres on the same day. We will have to see how the film will be received by fans and critics alike.
