The Fast & Furious franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular action franchises to have ever been released in movie theatres. Many fans would agree that it is essentially Vin Diesel’s series at this point, but Jason Statham has also played an important role in the franchise as well.
When the first trailer for Fast & Furious 9 released last year, many fans were shocked to see fan-favorite Han, portrayed by Sung Kang, was actually alive. Han was killed by a random car during a high-speed chase in 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Of course, director Justin Lin decided to change that and have the next few films take place before Tokyo Drift, which let Han appear in more films. 2013’s Fast & Furious 6 caught up to the present and this time around, the driver was revealed to be Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw.
Shaw would eventually become a beloved character and even have his own spin-off called Hobbs & Shaw. While speaking to EW, Jason Statham commented on Han’s revival. Statham joked that he better be brought back into the franchise.
“They better bring me back, because I need to put out that fire. If he’s got any score to settle, it’s with me.”
Statham isn’t expected to appear in the 9th film in the franchise but definitely wants to be part of the Fast & Furious franchise in some capacity as director Lin will be filming two more movies.
”I’m game. I love Justin Lin, he’s a great director. It’s a shame because when I joined the franchise all those years back, he went on to do something else and all I did with Justin was a little tag at the end. I need to do a movie with him. And I’d love to see all the Fast crew, Vin [Diesel] and everybody, they’re all great people. I have a lot of affection for them.”
Fast & Furious 9 is set to release on June 25 in the USA and fans are undoubtedly looking forward to seeing what will happen in the film. We will have to see whether Jason Statham will have a role to play in the upcoming two films after F9.
