The Mortal Kombat film based on the hit fighting game series was released recently and has proven to be a success commercially as it is already the highest-grossing R-rated film released during the COVID-19 pandemic
The film was made with the fans in mind and not so much the critics and the reviews show that. However, the commercial success of the film certainly makes the future of the film franchise bright.
One thing that the film didn’t feature was the iconic martial arts tournament that the game series is known for. While speaking with Collider, writer Greg Russo explained that he has a plan for the film series, which will include a second film and it will feature the famed Mortal Kombat tournament.
“Movie one, we were always kind of setting this up as — well I was setting it up, it’s basically in my head — I always saw [movie one] as pre-tournament, then [movie two is] hopefully tournament, then [movie three is] post-tournament. So the idea was that this was going to be a pre-tournament movie that would hopefully sow the seeds for the tournament, the final.”
We will have to see if Russo’s ideas become a reality and fans will get to see a Mortal Kombat trilogy instead of a one-off film. From the looks of it, a sequel is very likely to be made in the future.
