F9 is nearing its release date, and as the movie prepares to kick off with a bang and a series of free premieres of the entire Fast & Furious series in the theatres, the cast of The Fast & The Furious came together for revisiting the history on its 20th anniversary.
Vin Diesel, who plays the frontrunner Dominic Toretto, expressed that the romance between himself and Rodriguez’s might just be one of the greatest romantic storylines to ever take place in cinema. The actor told Entertainment Weekly:
One of the biggest blessings of the franchise is my relationship with Michelle. I’ve been told that the Dom-Letty love story is potentially the biggest love story that we’ve seen in cinema. After two decades, you understand that point.
Rodriguez, however, sees it very differently. While sharing an experience she had with the first movie in which she almost walked out of the movie, she explained that she had to tell the filmmakers what actual relationships work in real life.
You don’t just get with a guy because he’s hot. There’s a hierarchy there. Can that hot guy get beat up by who you’re dating? If he can, then you don’t date him, because why would you want to lose the hierarchy? In order to keep it real, I had to school them: “I know you guys like Hollywood and all that, but if you want it to be realistic, this is how it really works, and I’m not going to be a slut in front of millions of people, so you’re going to lose me if you don’t change this.” And they figured it out.
Jordana Brewster gives Rodriguez all the credit for pushing the filmmakers into getting women right. Brewster said “She was like, “No, I’m not playing that.’ And then she changed it completely. It went from a trophy girlfriend to this really layered character.” F9 will be released on 25 June 2021 in the US, before which it’ll be premiere in South Korea on 19th of May. Stay tuned for more.
