Zack Snyder, famed (or hated) for his work with Warner Bros. on the DCEU had already lost keys to the 300 kingdom way before we started his work on Man of Steel in an attempt to reboot the DCEU.
While he worked with WB on directing the hit action movie 300, which was based on Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s comic book series to tell the story of Battle of Thermopylae where King Leonidas courageously leads 300 Spartans against thousands from the Persian army.
Even though Snyder worked to co-write and produce 300: Rise Of An Empire with Noam Murro taking the project as the director, he had some ideas to revive the series again in 2016, and his idea was actually in sync with the culture of ancient Greek civilization.
As it turns out that he had been working on a 300 project even last year, since his deal with WB includes him working with them for three 300 project. The direction he had taken with the third and final part of 300 was going to be about a love story between Alexander the Great & Hephaestion. Since WB showed no interest in the project, it could not enter the production, Snyder told The Playlist:
I just couldn’t really get my teeth into it. Over the pandemic, I had a deal with Warner Brothers and I wrote what was essentially going to be the final chapter in ‘300.’ But when I sat down to write it I actually wrote a different movie. I was writing this thing about Alexander the Great, and it just turned into a movie about the relationship between Hephaestion and Alexander. It turned out to be a love story. So it really didn’t fit in as the third movie. But there was that concept, and it came out really great. It’s called ‘Blood and Ashes,’ and it’s a beautiful love story, really, with warfare. I would love to do it, [WB] said no… you know, they’re not huge fans of mine. It is what it is.
The trouble had started spilling between Snyder & DC when they had first started disagreeing with his vision of Batman V Superman, which released in 2016. Snyder left the project due to dealing with the death of his daughter, but inner tension were already there between WB and Snyder. As the recent release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally revealed to fans that his own vision was way different and comprehensive than Joss Whedon’s theatrical cut of Justice League, he and several other actors from the project came forward to reveal the manipulative ways of Joss Whedon and WB in general to create a toxic workplace.
Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead, which comes 17 years after the critically acclaimed Dawn Of The Dead, released on Spain on 14th May to good reviews. Let’s see what’s next for Zack Snyder, and whether it turns out to be a WB venture or not.
