The main villain from the classic Disney film 101 Dalmatians Cruella de Vil intrigued several generations of fans, but no one truly expected an origin story for her. That all after the release of Cruella this year, starring Emma Stone.
The origin story turned out to be both a commercial and critical success as it opened in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access service to audiences on Memorial Day weekend. The Film came in second place at the box office behind Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Part II, but still had very solid numbers considering it’s the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now it seems due to the largely positive response from fans and critics, a sequel has already been greenlit by Disney. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara are expected to return for the sequel. A Disney spokesperson revealed a sequel is already in the works due to the positive reception of the first film.
We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date…The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.
With Emma Stone putting on a tremendous performance as the titular character, we will have to wait and see if the upcoming film will be a worthy sequel to the original.
