For years fans wished that rap music got the same love that the pop music genre did in the mainstream. Now 50 Cent might have made that happen, because rap’s version of American Idol is on the way.

Unrapped is coming to ABC, but a premiere date has not been announced. 50 Cent confirmed this news on Twitter as he sent out a response to an article from Deadline which broke the big news.

“This is gonna be so cool, think Hip Hop’s American idol On ABC.Green Light Gang. [“fire” emoji “traffic signal” emoji]”

Set to be a judge and have a crucial behind-the-scenes role, 50 Cent is going to go all out with this one. It was reported that they plan head-to-head battles and eventually a king or queen will be crowned.

The show is hip-hop talent format where celebrity contestants, coached by iconic hip-hop mentors, go head-to-head in rap battles until a king or queen is crowned. Casting is underway. G-Unit Film & Television is producing with SFO Entertainment and Jackson will exec produce with Antonio Collier, Jon Sheinberg, Susie Ursitti Sheinberg, Gwen Osborne and Matt Feige.

This is exciting news for music fans and those who love reality television game show competitions. American Idol has a tremendous fan base, but is also a very dated franchise. Perhaps, this new idea with 50 Cent will help discover some new artists along the way as well.

Being in tune with pop culture doesn't mean it has to make sense, but he tries. Favorite bands include any group from Seattle who formed between 1991 and 1999. 5 Ozzfests under his belt and 12 Warped Tours, but his last concert was a bluegrass AC/DC cover band that was not 100% terrible.
