Billie Eilish likes to use her lyrics to open a window into her teenage brain, and she uses a lot of words to accomplish that feat. The 19-year-old singer was found to have the largest vocabulary out of any other modern artist.
According to a study from WordTips, Eilish tops a list when it comes to having the largest vocabulary out of any contemporary pop artist. On average, her songs include 196 unique words out of every 1,000 she pens.
Billie Eilish is sitting pretty at the top of a list full of huge names in music. Harry Styles gave her a run for that title with 159 unique words out of every 1,000. Lizzo ranked near the top with 153. On the other hand, Trey Song and Carly Rae Jepsen are at the bottom with only 66 and 69 unique words respectively.
Another artist who found themselves on the low end of things was Meghan Trainor. She only ranked in with 72 unique words out of every 1,000. Ariana Grande might need to buy a thesaurus as well, because she ranked in with 70. Michael Jackson, Adam Levine, Justin Bieber, Usher, and Tove Lo all tied with 80
Nick Jonas ranked in with 91 unique words per 1,000, but his brother Joe Jonas clocked in with 94, one more than Demi Lovato. In case you’re wondering, Taylor Swift made the list with only 86 unique words per 1,000. Still, she beat one of the greatest songwriters ever as Paul McCartney registered at 83.
You can check out the entire rankings breakdown in the graphic below. Billie Eilish is #1 out of all modern artists, but the list also includes “legends.” Patti Smith topped everyone with 217 unique words per 1,000 that she wrote. The bottom of the list is also dominated by modern artists.
