Britney Spears has been under conservatorship since 2008, and it’s taking a huge toll on her life and career. The pop star is legally responsible for taking care of her father James Spears who she described as abusive controlling. She accused him of trying to crack down on her spending.
Britney’s father was also against her taking a late vacation to Hawaii last month. The singer ended up going anyway but, for Britney’s team, it’s enough evidence to show that he needs to go.
The conservatorship is also taking a huge financial toll on Britney, as it’s costing her millions of dollars. She also has to pay for dad’s legal fees, which amount up to $1.3 million, including a $541,065.50 charge for Media Matters.
On Thursday, Spears’ new lawyer Mathew Rosengart asked a Los Angeles court to move up a hearing on whether James Spears should be removed as a conservator. The hearing is currently scheduled for September 29th, according to VICE News.
“Every day that passes is another day of avoidable harm and prejudice to Ms. Spears and the estate,” the Tuesday filing alleges. “Although a two-month wait for a hearing on the petition may not seem significant in the context of 13 years, Ms. Spears should not be forced to continue [to] feel traumatized, lose sleep, and suffer further. Every day matters.”
Britney Spears wants her father to be removed from the conservatorship immediately, and she says it’s a matter of saving her mental health and her finances. Many fans have shown support for the pop star by tweeting #FreeBritney.
