The main villain from the classic Disney film 101 Dalmatians Cruella de Vil intrigued several generations of fans, but no one truly expected an origin story for her. That all changed as Cruella released earlier this year and focused entirely on the origin of her character and starred Emma Stone. Scarlett Johansson recently sued Disney over the release of Black Widow and even Emma Stone considered suing Disney for streaming Cruella as well.
A sequel for the film was already in the works and as reported earlier, Emma Stone is set to star in the sequel film as well, despite the fact that she considered suing Disney. Now it seems the reason behind her not filing a lawsuit against Disney has been revealed.
According to a report by Matthew Belloni from the What I’m Hearing newsletter, Stone’s decision to star in future Cruella films like Cruella 2, or other Disney projects, might have been the main reason why she didn’t sue Disney. It was stated that Stone easily could have sued or released a statement criticizing Disney, but that did not happen as she is appearing in future Cruella projects.
It is different in Scarlett Johansson’s case as she is “done with Marvel movies” and does not need to maintain the relationship. It was further reported that Stone would have a much weaker legal case than Johansson if she ever did file a lawsuit, as Johansson has a “smoking gun email” from one of Marvel’s lawyers, where it was promised she would be informed if the Black Widow release plan deviated from a theatrical exclusive.
It is not known whether Cruella‘s sequel will be a theatrical exclusive launch, a Disney+ exclusive, or a hybrid release. With Emma Stone back in the saddle for the sequel film, the sequel should continue to make positive progress as Disney looks to capitalize on the success of the first film. We will keep you updated on this ongoing story.
