Jon Gruden has found himself in hot water over an email leak that claims the Raiders coach passed racial remarks towards NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith, according to The Wall Street Journal. The email has its origins in 2011 and alleges Gruden referred to the NFLPA figure as “Dumboriss Smith.”
The recipient of the alleged email is said to be Bruce Allen, a former general manager of the Washington Football Team. The contents of the email read: “Dumboriss Smith has lips the size of Michelin tires.” The report adds that Gruden was working for ESPN at the time and the comments coincided with the lockout period.
When approached, Gruden had this to say: “I don’t think he’s dumb. I don’t think he’s a liar. I don’t have a racial bone in my body, and I’ve proven that for 58 years.”
Smith, on the other hand, spoke of his experience dealing with racial comments in the past. “Racism like this comes from the fact that I’m at the same table as they are and they don’t think someone who looks like me belongs,” he said.
“I’m sorry my family has to see something like this but I would rather they know. I will not let it define me.”
Meanwhile, the NFL have responded to the email leak. The body referred to the contents of the email as “appalling, abhorrent and wholly contrary to the NFL’s values.” They further stated: “We condemn the statement and regret any harm that its publication may inflict on Mr. Smith or anyone else.”
As of now, Gruden is fulfilling his responsibilities as the head coach for the Raiders. Thirsty For More? Stay tuned!
