Saturday Night Live has recently undergone an overhaul of its cast ahead of its 47th season. As a result, fans have been introduced to several new comedians, who have taken over the reins of the show.
The most recent addition to this list is Sarah Sherman, another comedian trained in Chicago. Although Sherman grew up in Long Island, New York, she ventured into the comedy scene in Chicago.
Chicago has long been famous as a source of comedic talent. Several other Saturday Night Live alumni have come from the windy city, including the likes of Jim Belushi, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler.
Sherman got a lot of practice performing at the Hideout, a venue that is famous for its alternative programming. This provided her with the perfect opportunity to test her subversive material.
I was doing stand-up at traditional shows, and then I started doing comedy at a lot of DIY basement noise music shows. There was nothing that married the two. I was yearning for a freaky comedy space.
In addition to Sherman, Aristotle Athari and James Austin Johnson will also be joining the SNL cast. Two of Sherman’s co-stars, Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong, also hail from Chicago.
