Former professional fighter Brian Gassaway, who competed for major mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions such as Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bellator has passed away, according to TMZ.
Brian was 49 years old at the time of his death. His cause of death has has not been disclosed as of yet. He competed against MMA legend Diego Sanchez back in 2005. His family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to honor his memory and released the following statement in the wake of Brian’s passing.
“Brian’s selfless pursuit of improving the lives of his students through the study of martial arts was apparent to all. He gave his students purpose, pulling many up during their darkest moments. Being the light that showed them the path forward.”
Brian took part in various MMA promotions including Pancrase, Shooto and King of the Cage from 1996 until 2010. He had an impressive MMA record (29-20-2) during a career that spanned more than a decade.
“He lived his life with purpose and goodness, dedicating every waking moment to being a better person, husband, friend, fighter, and coach. And at the same time, he elevated the lives of all the people around him.”
The highlight of his career came with a title bout against MMA legend Diego Sanchez at UFC 54. Brian lost the bout against the defending champion via a TKO in the second round.
