R. Kelly will have plenty of time to think about the mistakes of his past before his next trial kicks off. A federal judge has ordered the disgraced singer to stand trial in Chicago facing charges of obstruction of justice and child pornography next August.
An report in USA Today from the Associated Press detailed the proceedings. R. Kelly is currently locked up in New York after being found guilty of nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering and may face life behind bars.
The Illinois pornography charges are in addition to separate indictments of sexual abuse in Illinois and a charge of child prostitution in Minnesota. Kelly has been in jail for the last two years.
R. Kelly was convicted on the New York charges in September. Kelly did not testify during the trial. His attorney, Deveraux Cannick, said he believed the entire case was bogus from the start.
“I think I’m even more disappointed the government brought the case in the first place given all the inconsistencies,”
Kelly was previously on suicide watch after the verdict. The protective measure has since been lifted.
R. Kelly rocketed to stardom in the 1990s hits like I Believe I Can Fly, His career remained strong well into the 2010s, and he scored another major hit with Ignition. Now the R&B star is facing life in prison for a series of horrible acts.
