David Chase is the big man in charge when it comes to the hit TV show The Sopranos. The success of The Many Saints of Newark as a standalone prequel has now led the show’s creator, writer, and showrunner to talks with WarnerMedia about bringing an entire prequel series to the HBO Max platform.
Fan theories have been all over the place since the new prequel movie dropped. In a recent interview with Deadline, Chase revealed that there were ongoing talks to flesh the world out even further. Ann Sarnoff, CEO of Studios and Networks for WarnerMedia confirmed the talks.
“We’re talking to David about a new series, Sopranos related, on HBO Max,”
Sarnoff also noted that WarnerMedia was very happy with the release of The Many Saints. It sounds like as long as the creatives and the suits can come together, this series is getting the green light.
Chase said that the new series would take place after the new film in the series’ chronology. Chase says a prequel is the only direction he wants to see The Sopranos take.
“There’s only one way that I would do it, and that was if Terry [Winter] and I could write the script together. That I would do.”
David Chase can’t be blamed for wanting creative control over the sequel. His creation created a pop culture touchstone in the late 1990s that continues to influence the way television is produced to this day.
