Dave Chappelle’s The Closer caused a lot of controversy and Netflix employees are a bit disgruntled right now. There was a walkout within the company as people were offended by what Chappelle said about the trans community. There is also talk of adding a disclaimer in front of the special, or even pulling it. Chappelle has a backup plan just in case that happens.
Variety reports that Dave Chappelle strongly hinted that he will take The Closer on the road if Netflix pulls the special. He performed a sold-out show in London on Friday night and there was nothing but love for the comedian.
It was reported that multiple people at the London event confirmed that Dave Chappelle said that he will do a 10-city tour in the United States where he will screen The Closer if Netflix nixes it.
According to multiple attendees, Chappelle indicated that he would visit 10 cities across the U.S. to screen the show. Chappelle’s rep did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.
The Closer dropped on October 5th and it garnered a ton of attention since then. Regarded as one of the best comedians alive today, Chappelle has respect from the comedy community and some are standing by him. Netflix might buckle under the mounting pressure from within their own company despite Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos standing behind Chappelle.
We will continue monitoring this story as more information is made known. Dave Chappelle might be coming to a city near you with a special to show if Netflix pulls it off their streaming service.
