A video of a British game show contestant confusing the Greek epic poet Homer for Homer Simpson from The Simpsons is going viral on social media. The post has garnered many responses with some debating about the education standards in of the country.
Tipping Point host Ben Shepherd asked contestant Dom the following question: “In his epic poems, Homer often refers to nectar as the drink of the gods and which other substance as their food?” The question is referring to the ancient Greek author Homer who penned epic poems like The Iliad and The Odyssey.
The correct answer to the question would be “ambrosia.” But Dom, unfortunately, thought that the question was referring to Homer Simpson, a character who can barely even read.
“I know he likes donuts. I think I’ll go with….donuts please, Ben.”
Homer Simpson surely likes donuts, but that was obviously not the correct answer. Shepherd’s mouth gaped open at the contestant’s reply. To make matters worse, the clip found its way on to Twitter and blew up. While many found it amusing, others felt sorry for the state of the education system.
An extended clip from the episode shows that a fellow contestant fully supported Dom’s answer, stating that she would also answer the question with “donuts.” You can check out both the clips below:
