Halloween Kills was released in theaters and on Peacock recently to a lukewarm critical reception. Some fans are now taking to social media to say that boogeyman Michael Myers is homophobic in the new horror flick.
TMZ gathered a collection of tweets from outraged fans. The premise of the viral movement is that Myers kills a gay couple in the movie.
Some of the tweets were certainly made as a joke. As with everything on the internet, though, it’s hard to identify the line between a joke and a legitimate gripe.
“HALLOWEEN KILLS WAS SO GOOD BUT WHY DID MICHAEL HAVE TO KILL THE ONE GAY COUPLE… MICHAEL MYERS IS HOMOPHOBIC CONFIRMED.”
In the movie, a middle-aged gay couple is living in Michael Myers’ childhood home. The place of much of the trauma that led him to become a psychotic killer seems to be as reasonable a haunt as any for a monster out for revenge.
Michael breaks into the home and kills the couple violently. He then lays their bodies side by side. Since he doesn’t talk, it’s hard to get a read on whether their sexuality had anything to do with the murder. It isn’t like he made an overtly hateful comment in a public space, after all.
