Netflix’s Squid Game has taken the world by storm, as it has now become the streaming platform’s most successful show yet. It was also said that Netflix paid $21.4 million for Squid Game. Being a big trending topic right now, it was certain the show was going to get parodied. Now it seems Halloween costumes inspired by the show have been banned in a NYC school district.
The South Korean survival drama has grossed more views than 111 million views already. Just a few days after becoming the biggest show on Netflix, the show earned almost $900 million for Netflix. It even had a council in English concerned recently.
As reported earlier, the show’s massive success and demand led to internet service providers demanding more money. This was due to a higher rate of bandwidth consumption. As expected, their demands were met with ridicule.
Halloween costumes based on the show are very popular right now. However, it seems one school district in upstate New York is not too keen on them. According to CNY Central, Principals at three elementary schools in the Fayetteville-Manlius district sent emails to parents saying the students are not permitted to wear costumes from the show.
“We have observed that some students at recess have been playing a version of the squid game which is intended for mature audiences, ages 16 and older. Due to concerns about the potential violent nature of the game, it is inappropriate for recess play or discussion at school.
Additionally, a Halloween costume from this show does not meet our school costume guidelines due to the potential violent message aligned with the costume. No items that can be interpreted as weapons should be brought to school, such as toy swords or guns, and that costumes should not be too gory or scary so as not to scare our younger students.”
Squid Game certainly has a lot of mature themes and content that are not appropriate for children. So it is understandable why many wouldn’t want the show to be seen by children, but with the advent of social media, that becomes a much harder task.
