Julianna Margulies has been portraying the character Laura Peterson on the Apple TV+ drama, “The Morning Show.” The actress drew criticism on account of the fact that the character of Laura is a lesbian, and fans feel that she should be played by an LGBTQ actor.
What makes the casting choice even more questionable is that the character of Laura gets outed as lesbian in the 90s and, as a result, has to rebuild her career from scratch. This, audiences have pointed out, is a level of persecution that Margulies herself would never have to face.
Margulies, however, does not seem to agree with the criticism, as she defended the casting choice in an interview on CBS. The actress stated that while she understands that it can be problematic for an actor to portray someone of a different race or gender, it gets more complicated with sexuality.
While Margulies did not make any explicit statements about her own sexuality, she did note that for someone to criticize her for playing a queer character, they would have to make a lot of assumptions about her.
The point Margulies was making seems to be that just because she is married to a man, she does not want people to assume her sexuality. Check out the interview below.
