Ed Sheeran is going to be more careful about the cameos he agrees to do. After fan backlash embarrassed the Irish singer, he is finally responding to the criticism. Sheeran appeared on the first episode of the shows seventh season. As expected, he’d like to avoid another similar experience.
In the scene, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) approaches a group of soldiers loyal to the rival Lannister family. Sheeran, acting as a soldier, sings “Hands of Gold.” Fans and critics alike balked at the use of such a famous pop star on a show about a fantasy world. The Independent reported Sheeran’s reaction.
“I feel like I pissed off a lot of people by being in that, but anytime I meet someone that is like, ‘oh you cameoed on that show,’ I’m like, ‘What would you say?’ Everyone would say yes. I was a fan of the show; they asked me to be in it. I didn’t expect there to be that much backlash but I am definitely more careful when I am offered cameos now.”
At the time of the backlash, Sheeran went so far to even delete his Twitter account. He shied away from acting for a couple years. Then, Sheeran played himself in the romantic comedy Yesterday in 2019.
The singer has a plethora of other acting cameos to his credit. In 2016, he played himself in Bridget Jones’s Baby. He played Sir Cormac in The Bastard Executioner for FX. Now, he’s being more selective with his film and television roles.
Ed Sheeran released his latest album, =, on October 29. In the past, he’s toured with Taylor Swift. He’s had multiple Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Shape of You” and “Perfect.” He kicks off an extensive European tour next spring.
