Comedian Kevin Hart had a meeting with one of 2021’s most controversial figures on Monday. TMZ obtained a photo of Hart meeting with Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos at in Beverly Hills. The pair had dinner together, along with a lengthy discussion.
Sardanos found himself transformed from a behind the scenes corporate role to a lightning rod of controversy after the Dave Chappelle Netflix special “The Closer” spawned accusations of transphobia. The meeting is notable because Chappelle and Hart maintain a close friendship.
Chappelle’s comments sparked outrage in the trans community and from allies all over the place. The incident also brought several celebrities and fellow comedians to his defense. Jon Stewart and Caitlyn Jenner were among those who offered support to Dave.
It wouldn’t normally be unusual for a meeting between Hart and a big wig at Netflix to take place. Hart has his own Netflix deal for several movie and comedy specials. The meeting might have had nothing to do with that.
The timing for the get-together is suspect, however. The public could perceive the meeting as another comic cozying up to a man who enabled hateful speech on a major international platform. Hart’s professional history may give a hint about the discussions.
In 2018, Hart stepped down a the planned host for the Academy Awards after fans dug up several homophobic posts the comedian made on his Twitter account. Hart apologized, but the internet never forgets. Kevin Hart may be worried that his previous words are coming back to haunt him again and he may want to get ahead of it before it becomes a career crisis like it has for Dave Chappelle.
