Eminem has reached another iconic milestone in his legendary career. The video for his breakthrough single, “The Real Slim Shady” has surpassed an unbelievable 600 million views on YouTube. The clip’s popularity is even more impressive given the fact that the tune has been played nearly 800 million times on Spotify.
In it’s first nine years on the video site, the video was viewed 400 million times. Two years later, that number had risen to 600 million. It hit 500 views this past February.
That means the track, which is old enough to drink at 21 years, received 100 million views in under a year. To reiterate, a song that is more than two decades old still received 100 million plays on YouTube in one year. That is an astounding testament to the longevity of a classic hip-hop single.
The video was directed by Dr. Dre with Philip Atwell. The clip is ripe with celebrity cameos. D12, Fred Durst, and Dre himself all appear in the video. It won Video of the Year and Best Male Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. It also took home two Billboard awards for Maximum Vision Video and Best Rap/Hip Hop clip.
The song’s success launched the already successful Detroit rapper from the top of the hip-hop heap to the A-list. Shady went on to star in the hit film 8 Mile. He’s become a massively successful producer. Eminem has become one of the biggest stars in the world. It all really got going with one hilarious music video.
