Dave Chappelle needs no introductions as far as being a stand-up comedian are concerned as his range of comedies and impeccable timing made him a huge success. Chappelle’s latest special on Netflix, called ‘The Closer,’ dropped on the streaming platform back on October 5th. It seems Donnell Rawlings has given his thoughts on the matter as well.
The National Black Justice Coalition called on Netflix to remove Dave Chappelle’s special from the streaming platform for Chappelle’s harmful and transphobic remarks against the trans community.
Despite all the controversy, many have come to Dave Chappelle’s defense. This included trans comedian Flame Monroe as well. Recently, even Andrew Yang backed up Dave Chappelle. Even Bill Maher decided to defend Dave Chappelle recently.
While speaking to TMZ, Dave Chappelle’s close friend Donnell Rawlings stated that people have misunderstood the controversy surrounding Chappelle. This is because the backing he gets is misinterpreted.
Rawlings said that most celebrities backed up Dave Chappelle because of freedom of speech and artists’ rights. They may or may agree with when Chappelle said.
Dave Chappelle also made it clear he is unapologetic regarding his transphobic comments and that is unlikely to change anytime soon from the looks of it. In the current day and age of cancel culture, it is for the best if people simply don’t say anything as controversial as what Chappelle did.
