Britney Spears has finally been relieved of conservatorship after 13 years, Deadline reports. The 39-year-old had been placed in a restrictive legal entanglement since 2008. Today was a formality, but she is finally free after so many #FreeBritney tweets and unbridled fan support.
Judge Brenda Penny of the Los Angeles Superior Court ruled in favor of Spears during a packed hearing Friday. The decision will allow the “Toxic” songstress to regain control of almost every aspect of her life previously overseen by her father and co-conservator, Jamie Spears.
During Friday’s hearing, the singer’s lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, pushed for an end to the court-controlled conservatorship. Rosengart also presented a plan that would allow Spears to live her life the way she wants to live it.
Her father Jamie Spears has been pushing for an end to the court-imposed conservatorship for his own legal reasons. The elder Spears was represented by his new lawyer Alex M. Weingarten. The 69-year-old had been represented by Holland & Knight team during previous court appearances.
Britney Spears’ spouse, 27-year-old Sam Asghari, posted a tribute to supporters and fans of the #FreeBritney movement on Instagram Thursday. Check out the post below:
