Taylor Swift is a prolific song-writer and singer. No one can express heartbreak better than Swift. Her songs have always struck a chord with people. She recently released the original 10 minute long version of her favorite song “All Too Well” from one of her best albums, “Red“.
The re-recording is Swift‘s countermeasure against the changed ownership of the masters to her first six studio albums. Red is all about “red” emotions. In an Instagram post, Swift said “Red” “resembled a heartbroken person” musically and lyrically. Its songs discuss the complex and conflicting feelings resulting from fading romance. Some of the songs describes Taylor’s break-ups in great detail. All Too Well is one of them. Although Swift has never confirmed that the song is about Jake Gyllenhaal it’s widely accepted that it is. The newly added lyrics have confirmed the theory.
The age difference between Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift is roughly 10 years. Taylor was 20 and Jake was 29 when they started dating. The couple broke up shortly after the singer turned 21. The same age difference is between Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, who appear in Taylor’s self directed short film for the 10 minute version of All Too Well. The short film was released yesterday and is available on YouTube.
“You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine
And that made me want to die.”
“And I was never good at telling jokes, but the punch line goes
I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age”“You, who charmed my dad with self-effacing jokes / Sipping coffee like you were on a late-night show / But then he watched me watch the front door all night, willing you to come / And he said, ‘It’s supposed to be fun turning 21,’
Taylor recalls the reason for the break-up that Gyllenhaal made up was age difference and secondarily the difference in personality. Swift mentions that she was never good at making jokes in contrast to Gyllenhaal who is regarded as a very funny guy. In the song Taylor makes several references to his humorous and playful disposition.
Taylor proves her ex-lover wrong in saying that the problem was purely age gap. The lyrics “I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age” also fit a direct interpretation as Jake Gyllenhaal is currently dating Jeanne Cadieu who is 25 to Jake Gyllenhaal is 40.
The 11 time Grammy winning Icon never misses the mark when it comes to heartbreak songs. As Swifties, we are elated over the new release. We wish Taylor all the best for upcoming albums.
