Ever since Snyder-cut started to snowball worldwide, thanks to the cult campaign, the hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut started popping up on several social media platforms in support of David Ayer’s original version of the film. Ayer has been encouraging #ReleaseTheAyerCut, and now, Jared Leto is starting to get vocal about it.
Jared played a punk, offbeat version of the Joker, who surprisingly, had minimal screen-time in the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad. Ayer cunningly used this opportunity to tease the fans that Leto absolutely ‘nailed it’ in the unseen footages.
On December 20, 2020, Zack Snyder reported in an interview that he plans to offer support for Ayer’s Suicide Squad cut as soon as he’s done working on his Justice League cut. In the Los Angeles premiere of House of Gucci on Thursday night, Leto expressed his thoughts about #ReleaseTheAyerCut to Variety,
“Absolutely, Why not? Why wouldn’t they? That’s what streaming’s for, right?”
The actor is offering full support to #ReleaseTheAyerCut being made available to the fans. David Ayer also confirmed there’s only some VFX work to be completed in order to express his art-slash-vision. However, Ann Sarnoff, head of Warner Bros. seemed reluctant about putting the film into production.
Leto recently opened up about his “method acting” on the sets of Suicide Squad. In the lead-up to the film’s release, there were stories cooking up about the Joker sending used condoms to cast mates like Margot Robbie and Will Smith. However, Leto now claims that those were just exaggerated stories, blown way out of proportion since everything was fun, adventure and laughter in their set. Leto told Entertainment Weekly,
“I’m playing a guy called the Joker, it’s okay to play some jokes. Nothing ever crossed any lines, and it’s not up to other people on the internet to create those lines.”
On July 3, 2021, Joel Kinnaman, John Cena and Mayling Ng called for the cut to release. Hours later, Margot Robbie called for it to be released. There is growing speculation that HBO Max will release the Ayer Cut, since it would earn them a great deal of money for a very small cost. But at this point, only time will tell.
