The first trailer for Bel-Air, the dramatic re-imagining of 90’s television hit The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has dropped. It features Jabari Banks as he portrays Will. The series is based on a fan film that went viral with the more serious take on the idea.
The trailer was released by Peacock, the streaming service that will host the new Bel-Air series. The show was greenlit for two seasons and Will Smith is an executive producer.
The trailer shows Will underwater. He is awash in a sea of material possessions. He then sees a crown and a thrown. As he descends to the throne, the crown lands on his head and he smiles. That’s how he became the prince of a town called Bel-Air, at least in the trailer. Will Smith narrates the lyrics to the original theme over the imagery.
The series is described as a deeper dive than a 30-minute sitcom could take into the lives of the characters. While the original series did tackle some serious issues, the one-hour drama format will allow for more meat on the bone. It’s an intriguing formula.
Morgan Cooper, director of the fan film that inspired the series, is serving as co-writer, director, and executive producer. Showrunners include T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson. Smith introduced newcomer Jabari Banks as Will over the summer.
Will Smith has been taking on a lot lately. Not only is he producing the show, but he also recently released his memoir, “Will.” The candid book includes plenty of crazy stories, including Will borrowing money from a drug dealer and his jealousy over Tupac Shakur.
