Khabib Nurmagomedov will forever be considered as one of the best UFC fighters to have competed in the MMA world. He ended his MMA career for good back in March and since then has been enjoying his life in retirement. Khabib also admitted he could never be on Mike Tyson’s level. It seems Colby Covington doesn’t think Khabib is the GOAT.
There was a lot of speculation regarding him returning to the UFC as he was still undefeated, with many believing he would come back to make his record an impressive 30-0. However, Dana White had confirmed back in March that the Russian fighter has retired for good.
There are many who still consider Khabib the greatest of all time, but there are also other MMA fighters who do not necessarily agree with that notion. The likes of Jon Jones came to mind, and now it seems Covington as well.
While speaking to MMA News, Colby Covington talked about Khabib’s accomplishment. While he agreed Khabib belongs in the GOAT discussion, he is most certainly not the undisputed GOAT of MMA.
“He never defended his title that many times. He took a lot of breaks. And you know, he never really had someone that was well-rounded that fought him. He fought a bunch of strikers.
“It was good timing for his career… He didn’t have to find anybody that could wrestle and strike with him… I don’t consider him the greatest of all time. I mean, he has a great resume. Undefeated, retiring undefeated is a great mark. But definitely, he didn’t challenge, or he didn’t defend that title enough times. And you know he didn’t beat enough high-level names to really speak for his resume as the GOAT. “
Khabib had previously stated that he has no interest in continuing his career for money fights. Since his retirement, he has been focused on Eagle Fighting Championship. However, it must not be forgotten that Khabib does miss fighting in the UFC as well.
