Billie Eilish has transformed from teen sensation to veteran musician before fans’ eyes. She says that’s the reason for her recent dramatic change in hair color. She says the black and green hair she sported in her earlier days came from a place of fear.

Billie recently talked to Vanity Fair, where she shared her thoughts on growing up. She says that the new blonde look has given her increased confidence. It’s allowed her to be more comfortable when she goes out in public.

“My attitude used to be like, ‘I can’t go out, I can’t go here, I can’t go there.’… I wasn’t able to go to a park or go get coffee, It freaked me out. But in the last year I opened up to it. If I’m being cautious and not trying to be in everybody’s faces, it’s cooI.

I didn’t used to be able to do that because my pride was too huge. I was like, ‘I only want to be seen if I look like myself.’ So I would never wear anything normal.”

Now, Eilish says she doesn’t think about whether people love or hate her anymore. It’s a sign of her increasing maturity as an artist and as a person. She no longer has time for those insecurities.

“I feel a lot of pressure, but back then I was more loved—I was pretty overall loved, to be honest. And I was scared because I wanted to keep that love. But now tons of people hate me, so I’m not worried anymore. If you like me, you like me, and if you don’t, you don’t.”

This is the fifth straight year Vanity Fair has featured Billie Eilish in an interview. They’ve asked the same exact questions every year. Now, fans can look back at five years of personal and professional growth. You can see the whole interview below.
