Last summer, supermodel Ubah Hassan launched her own line of hot sauce. With low expectations due to starting a business at the peak of a global pandemic, Ubah was hoping to sell a couple hundred bottles and have some left over to share with friends. An endorsement from Oprah Winfrey changed everything for Hassan’s brand.
Oprah included Hassan’s “Ubah Hot” line of spicy condiments in her annual “Oprah’s Favorite Things” list. According to Page Six, Ubah Hassan was flooded with orders once the influential Winfrey mentioned the product. Sales went through the roof.
“I had about 1,000 boxes when I started in June… I launched in a pandemic, and it’s a new product, so I thought, maybe sell 100 or 200 and send the rest to family and friends to try it…
I was running low on inventory when I got the phone call… We were packing 36 to 40 boxes in minutes. If Elon Musk saw us in this warehouse and how fast and efficient we were working, he wouldn’t need to create robots.”
The $23-per-jar sauce moved 10,000 units after the announcement. Fans can check it out for themselves at her Ubah Hot website. She says Oprah has been a blessing for her business.
Ubah Hassan was the face of the 2009 spring/summer Ralph Lauren line. She’s also worked for Gucci, Oscar de la Renta, and other high-demand designers. After her success in the world of hot sauce, she says she can’t wait to give back the way Oprah Winfrey does.
