Elon Musk has been selected as the 2021 Time Person of the Year. The wealthiest man on the planet and Tesla CEO was described as influential and emblematic of massive shifts in our society. Musk has also devoted himself to space travel, partnering with NASA for several SpaceX launches.
Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal explained the choice. He said Musk’s influence on and off the planet led to their choice. Not only is he super rich, but he’s also super influential.
“Person of the Year is a marker of influence, and few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and potentially life off Earth too. In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world’s richest person but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society.”
The announcements were made during a YouTube presentation on Monday, December 13. Time previously unveiled POTY award winners on television. They also added several sub-categories go along with the award.
Olivia Rodrigo was named entertainer of the year. Gymnast Simone Biles took home athlete of the year. The heroes of the year were vaccine scientists and the miracle of mRNA, which made the rapid rollout of vaccines against COVID-19 possible.
Elon Musk has been a controversial figure to many. There is no doubt that he has been massively influential, however. Musk is estimated to be worth nearly $300 billion.
