Azealia Banks says that her former manager, Jeff Kwatinetz, pretended to be interested in a romantic relationship in order to steal money from her. Kwatinetz is suing for extortion. Banks is counter-suing for breach of contract and fraud.
According to court documents, obtained by Rolling Stone, Banks is accusing her former manager of attempting to control and manipulate her. The end game was to steal money from Banks. He frequently misled her by sending romantic messages and gifts.
“[Kwatinetz] attempted to control and manipulate Banks so he could eventually steal from her, by charming the 23-year-old from Harlem and attempting to convince her that he loved her. He would repeatedly tell her in e-mails that he loved her, had sleepovers with her and sent her gifts.”
Azealia also claims that Kwatinetz earned $15,344.94 for her debut album. The record earned nearly $1.5 million in profits. Kwatinetz responded by saying Banks was being irresponsible and dangerous.
“Ms. Banks is a talented artist, but she has been acting irresponsibly and dangerously for years. Ms. Banks’ cross-complaint has no merit and is nothing more than a PR stunt. Mr. Kwatinetz will vindicate his rights in court, where he will prove that Ms. Banks’ allegations are false and slanderous.”
The courts will ultimately decide who is right and who is wrong in the case. The next hearing is scheduled for February 1, 2022. The messy legal battle may be a long one.
