Service workers really don’t get enough credit, or wages. This waitress got the stiff end of the situation multiple times in a row.
A waitress in Arkansas was fired from her workplace after she was forced to split a generous tip with fellow staff members. Ryan Brandt was serving a party of over two dozen guests when she learned about the $4,400 tip.
The guests she were serving were part of a $100 Dinner Club – a group of more than 40 people who dine at a local restaurant once a week and pay an extra $100 per head. Their intent: to help struggling servers.
A video uploaded to Instagram shows Brandt learning about the generous tip and breaking down in tears. The server was told she and her colleague (who left home early due to poor health) were getting $2,200 each.
“It was an incredible thing to do and to see her reaction was awesome, to see what that meant to her, the impact that it’s had on her life already,” organizer Grant Wise spoke about the moment Brandt came to know about her reward.
Brandt soon revealed she was told by the hotel management to share her tip with all the staff. “I was told that I was going to be giving my cash over to my shift manager, and I would be taking home 20 percent,” she told KNWA.
She was later sacked by her bosses. “It was devastating, I borrowed a significant amount for student loans. Most of them were turned off because of the pandemic but they’re turning back on in January and that’s a harsh reality,” Brandt told the outlet.
Wise, who personally handed over the money to Brandt after learning she was forced to split her share, even tried to contact the hotel management after the server was fired. He has since set up a GoFundMe to help Brandt and other struggling servers.
