Denzel Washington is regarded as one of the greatest actors around today. Sadly, he recently experienced a great loss in his personal life that he is still dealing with to this day.
Denzel Washington lost his mother back in June. His mother, Lennis, died at age 97 and Denzel has mourned her death ever since. Last night, Denzel opened up about losing his mother during a rare talk show appearance.
The 66-year-old actor appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday. He recalled some past stories related to his mother. Denzel jokingly tells that he was the son who gave his mom the hardest time.
“I don’t know if I was her favorite, I gave her the hardest time.”
Denzel appreciated Stephen Colbert for his condolences. He said that a mother is a son’s first true love. He got all choked up and emotional while speaking up.
“A mother is a son’s first true love. A son, especially that first son, is a mother’s last true love.”
Denzel continued that his mother was there for everything. She was very supportive of all his endeavors. After Denzel asked for a tissue, Colbert flashed a throwback photo of the star, his wife Pauletta and Lennis at the 1990 Academy Awards when Denzel won Best Supporting actor for Glory.
The legendary actor became embarrassed of himself as he teared up. He jokingly said that he didn’t shed a single tear at her funeral. When Colbert asked why, Denzel amusingly said that he was saving it up for the show. The actor finally urged the audience to hug and love their dearest ones while they can.
