Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier faced off against each other in their third fight together in the main event of UFC 264. It was a highly anticipated fight, to say the least. It seems Colby Covington doesn’t think another McGregor vs Poirier fight will be worth it.
The main event truly had a big fight feel as many fans were excited to see which competitor would end up victorious. In a shocking turn of events, Conor McGregor fractured his ankle at the end of the first round, leading to Dustin Poirier winning the fight via TKO.
After the fight, Dustin Poirier accused Conor McGregor of cheating during their bout. McGregor was alleged to have illegally grabbed his gloves and pulled Dustin Poirier into upkicks. McGregor even admitted to using illegal moves.
While speaking to Hele Yee Sports, Colby Covington addressed another fight between McGregor and Poirier. He stated that it will be pointless and it is better if McGregor goes after the lightweight title instead.
“Yeah, it makes sense, you know. Conor should go out there and fight for the title. There’s no reason for him to fight Dustin now, it’s just that fight is pointless, that fight’s dead. Dustin’s not a big draw or anything. So that fight makes a ton of sense.
Conor McGregor can heal up and fight that, and Dustin can reevaluate and decide if he still wants to keep fighting. Because you could already see the quit in him in the interview… He’s (Conor McGregor) a former champion, a two-division champion. He accomplished some great things in the sport, brought a lot of new eyes to the sport. He’s done some good things.”
Poirier also previously made it clear that he doubts his feud with Conor McGregor will ever end. McGregor is expected to be out of action for a year as he is set on returning as soon as possible. We will have to wait and see whether Conor McGregor faces Dustin Poirier again in the future.
