Professional sports crowds have been more testy than usual since fans were welcomed back after the COVID pandemic kept them away for a year. There have been plenty of fights at NFL games. Baseball has had its share, too. Fans have even heckled LeBron James to his face.
The latest situation nearly got out of control. Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz. The point guard heard a San Antonio Spurs fan say something he didn’t like. He then attempted to go confront the unruly fan.
Clarkson’s Jazz teammates quickly mobilized. They had to hold Clarkson back to prevent the situation from escalating. A Spurs fan shared video of the sticky situation on Twitter.
“Jordan Clarkson was held back by teammates after a fan said something to him. Clarkson was frustrated after another non-call and then having a 3-pointer he raced back to try to defend bounced in. As a timeout was called, a fan stood up and said something. Clarkson walked toward his sideline but the fan must have said something else because Clarkson turned around to look at him but kept walking.
Fan was still standing and jawing so Clarkson stopped, turned around and walked to the fan. Teammates and security rushed in. The fan was later escorted out.”
Jordan Clarkson responded in the post-game press conference. He said the fan was antagonizing and challenging him. While the behavior of the spectator may have been out of control, there’s never an excuse for a professional athlete to get physically involved. Most NBA fans vividly remember Malice at the Palace. They would prefer that it never happens again.
