The CW Network is well-known for shows like Batwoman and Walker. The network primarily targets teenagers and young adults. Recently, the network’s joint owners have mentioned the possibility of selling it.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Nexstar Media Group Inc., The United States’ largest broadcaster and a substantial owner of network affiliates are among the contenders. WarnerMedia and ViacomCBS Inc. are also considering selling a large portion or all of the CW Network, which they jointly operate.
According to the outlet, they are far advanced and a deal might be achieved shortly, albeit the talks could still break apart. The most likely scenario is Nexstar acquiring a majority position in the CW, with CBS and WarnerMedia retaining minority owners and earning pledges to be the network’s key program providers. Nexstar has already made significant investments in NewsNation, a nationwide television news program.
CBS and WarnerMedia have been discussing strategic possibilities for the CW Network for several months. The network isn’t lucrative as a stand-alone broadcast business, but the material it produces is a significant asset for the parent firms’ other platforms.
Warner Bros., which produces some of the CW’s most popular episodes, including “Riverdale,” has made a lot of money selling the shows to Netflix Inc. over the years. “All American” and “The Flash” are two more popular CW series. “Walker,” based on intellectual property from the TV show “Walker Texas Ranger,” is a popular CBS-produced show for the CW.
With the debut of HBO Max, future CW episodes produced by Warner Bros. will be directed there. AT&T is in the process of forming a new firm by combining its WarnerMedia entertainment holdings. It will include the cable networks TNT, TBS, and CNN, with programming behemoth Discovery Inc. The transaction is scheduled to be completed in the spring.
Let’s see how this plays out, considering most of the great shows are on the CW network. Tune in to Thirsty for further developments on this topic.
