The Weeknd dropped Dawn FM, a new album that he announced earlier this week. The album features contributions from Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Quincy Jones, Oneohtrix Point Never, Jim Carrey, Swedish House Mafia, Max Martin, Calvin Harris, and Uncut Gems co-director Josh Safdie. It also includes the 2021 single “Take My Breath.”
The Weeknd has already accomplished enough to be considered one of the all-time greats in such a short amount of time. He’s been spoken about a lot among the biggest names in pop music. Blinding Lights, from his After Hours album, is often regarded as the album’s best song.
The Weeknd has been a full-fledged pop artist for a few years now. The Canadian artist refused to reveal his true identity early in his career and sung dark songs about sex, drugs, and longing. House of Balloons, his famous mixtape from 2011, seemed like a dreamy soundtrack to an infinite, libidinous loop of intentional couch crashing.
However, since his promotion to the big leagues, The Weeknd has fought to keep some of his brooding authenticity. Fans of his infamous 2012 Trilogy compilation rebelled in their antihero’s debauchery, singing as if he’d slept beneath the coolest bridge in some filthy city where the prevalent existential questions were always, “Wait, where am I?” “What are we doing here?”
In contrast, despite its joyful highs, 2016’s Starboy came to feel like one bloated, never-ending fashion week catwalk. Thankfully, the Weeknd’s fifth album, Dawn FM, concentrates those cosmic desires to anoint us with the most seductive music to the purgatory portal. The release of the new album comes after the Weeknd’s long-awaited 2020 album After Hours.
