Brian Flores is the latest to fall victim to this year’s postseason NFL coaching carousel. The team fired their head coach after his second consecutive winning season. The Dolphins failed to qualify for the playoffs this year.
Flores coached Miami to two of only seven winning seasons in the past two decades. Ownership appears to have wanted even more. Many were shocked at the decision to get rid of Brian Flores.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on Twitter this morning. A followup report came attached with a statement from Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. The owner explained the curious move.
“I made a decision today to part ways with Brian Flores,” Ross said. “After evaluating where we are as an organization and what we need going forward to improve, I determined that key dynamics of our football organization weren’t functioning at a level I want it to be and felt that this decision was in the best interest of the Miami Dolphins. I believe we have a talented young roster in place and have the opportunity to be much better in 2022.
I want to thank Brian for his hard work and wish him nothing but the best in his future.”
The Dolphins must now search for a new leader in a crowded coaching marketplace. Stephen Ross said it was unlikely that he would consider Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Brian Flores is likely to wind up as a head coach somewhere in the NFL. At least there, he’ll be wanted.
