Alec Baldwin has faced a lot of negative press in the last several months. Baldwin was inadvertantly involved in a tragedy on the set of his movie Rust when a live round killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Alec has only recently started to make public appearances. There is a new controversy that Baldwin will now have to deal with.
TMZ has reported that Alec Baldwin is being sued by the family of a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan. Relatives of the late Rylee McCollum claim Baldwin sent the family $5,000 after he learned of the Marine’s death. The actor later went on to comment on a photo Rylee’s sister shared at the Washington Monument on January 6, 2021.
That fateful day, insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol building to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election. Baldwin went on to exchange messages with the sister where he accused her of being one of the rioters at that day. Alec recanted his act of kindness and reposted the photo.
The family believes Baldwin’s behavior on social media was negligent and reckless. They say Alec should have known that the allegations would cause the family harm. The McCollum family has denied any participation in the violent riot.
The lawsuit brought by the McCollums against Alec Baldwin charges defamation, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and others. They are asking for more than $25 million in damages. Alec Baldwin has not responded to the legal action.
Alec Baldwin could have kept the conversation private. Baldwin believed he was doing the right thing by sharing the photo. It will now be up to the courts to decide if his allegations are worth $25 million or not. Alec is hoping not to let negativity ruin his 2022.
