Enes Kanter has used his platform as an NBA star to spread a message that is deeply important to him. Enes believes very strongly in the virtues of democracy. Kanter has aimed to expose Chinese Uyghur slave labor camps and railed against Xi Jinping’s government’s treatment of women. NBA legend Yao Ming recently offered Kanter a visit to China for a bit of a cultural exchange.

Kanter was skeptical about the offer. Enes doesn’t believe he’d get to see the real China. The Boston Celtics big man said he’d accept the invite if Yao made some exceptions that Yao is probably unable to accommodate.

“Just yesterday, I saw on the news that former NBA player Yao Ming invited me to China. I want to be very clear: I have nothing against Chinese people. My problem is with the cultish Chinese Communist Party and the brutal dictator Xi Jinping…

I would like to come to China this summer and see everything with my own eyes. But on this trip, will we be able to visit the Uyghur slave labor camps or visit the innocent women being tortured, raped, and abused? Will we get to see how the regime destroys bodies after harvesting their organs so there is no evidence?

Or, will you show me propaganda only? While we are in China, can we swing by Tibet? Can we see what the regime is doing to these beautiful people? Under the Chinese government’s brutal rule, Tibetan peoples’ basic rights and freedoms are non-existent. Let’s show the world how the Chinese Communist Party is erasing Tibetan identity, history, and culture…”

Enes Kanter is very serious about his criticisms of the Chinese government. It is very unlikely that Yao Ming will be taking him to tour the horrors of the regime. We’ll see if Yao Ming gives any kind of response.
